The Role of Force in Neurons

The Role of Force in Neurons The Role of Force in Neurons Muscles and bones are the stuff of force. In the body, these two do the heavy lifting, providing support. Neurons, of course, serve an altogether different purpose, transmitting messages, for which theres no need for strength. And yet, as neuroscientists have known for the past 30 or so years, if you grow a neuron in a petri dish, it comes out straight and taut. If its very straight it must be taut, there must be more force in it, says Taher Saif, a hochschulprofessor of mechanical science and engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Why do the neurons have this force?Saif set out to answer this question. First, he needed to know if the stiff neuron phenomenon was exclusive to the petri dish, or could be found in living flesh. A few sensors in a fruit fly embryo revealed that indeed the neurons were taut in vivo as well. But that didnt explain why. That was important to find, but not as exciting, because, y ou know, what is this tension doing? So Saif and his team got back inside a fruit fly. This time they severed the neuron in the middle.Doctoral student Scott Siechen, left, and professor Taher Saif and their colleagues found that tension in axons is required for proper neuron signaling. Image L. Brian Stauffer / Illinois.eduSnipping the NeuronA typical, unsevered neuron has a phalanx of neurotransmitters at the end waiting for a signal from brain or spine. They dont leap off to do their thingactivate a muscle, gland, or another neuronuntil they get the signal. But after Saifs snip, the neurotransmitters diffused themselves in the neuron. The left their usual gathering spot and simply dispersed. But these messengers were not at all lost forever. When Saif pulled the cut ends taut again, using micropipettes, the neurotransmitters returned to their proper place at neurons end. Retightening of the neuron brought the neurotransmitters back to their rightful place where they could properly await orders from above. Neurons were never supposed to have anything to do with mechanical force, says Saif. They are for carrying signals, making us think, making us sense. What we found is that, for as yet unknown reasons, they generate this force, and it needs the tautness to accumulate neurotransmitters at the junctions. There was no way for Saif to use his micropipettes to slacken the fruit fly neuron from the ends, rather than snip, to see the same effect. Neurons want to remain taut, and when slackness is introduced by bringing the ends together, they shorten themselves in a matter of seconds to maintain the same level of tension. But it takes about half an hour for the neurotransmitters to redistribute themselves throughout the neuron. So cutting them was the only option.Memory LossExactly why the neurotransmitters leave their posts when a neuron is loosened isnt yet known, but Saif has his ideas. If its taut, all the segments align themselves and the route is very continuo us, he says. But if it loses its tautness, they tend to randomly orient themselves. The neurotransmitters may get lost at the bends, unsure of how to find the end where they belong.Normally, the neurotransmitters remain stuck where they should be in a dense network of fibers at the end of the neuron. But these fibers are dependent on tension. Snipping the neuron destabilizes them and the neurotransmitters run back inside the length of the neuron.Though this is just the first glimpse of the role of neuron force, Saifs research could conceivably point the way toward understanding neurological diseases. If the tautness cannot be maintained, from a lack of glucose or whatever it is, it begins to relax, and the neurotransmitters are not available, he conjectures. That may be one of the reasons for memory loss.As we learn more and more about the role of tautness, well also learn the price of loosing it.Michael Abrams is an independent writer.Learn about the latest trends in bioengineering at ASMEs Global Congress onNanoEngineering for Medicine and Biology. Interview Questions About the Future - Older Candidates

Interview Questions About the Future - Older CandidatesInterview Questions About the Future - Older CandidatesEven though youre a mature adult, you may find yourself in the job market. Its tough enough of older workers to score new jobs and even the interview can work against you. The interviewer may ask questions about where you see yourself in fiveor 10 years, which could be a way to determine how close you are to retirement. Its important to answer these types of questions the right way, so heres what to do when youre faced with interview questions about the future as an older candidate. How to Answer Questions About the Future for Older Applicants Answering any question about your future can be tricky since the employer may be looking for someone who will be happy to stay in the position for which they are interviewing, and they also may be assessing your future potential. They dont want to hire someone wholl up and leave the job in just a short time. But, what if you are plan ning on retiring sooner rather than later? The employermay be concerned about hiring someone who wont stay with the company for long. Youll need to be honest, but you can address this issue in a positive manner. First, Be Sure to Share Your Interest in the Job Its important to reference what is most appealing to you about the job, as well as your interest in mastering that job for a reasonable period of time. The interviewer needs to realize youre leid interested in the job for just a short term. If the job is one that an employee would normally hold for many years, then your focus should remain on excelling in that role and fully developing the knowledge and skills to add optimal value and grow within the company. Then Let the Interviewer Know When You Want to Advance If you wish to advance from that initial job, then you should research a typicalcareer pathevolving from the job for which you are applying. You can ask your interviewer about options for promotion once you hav e established yourself with the company. By expressing interest in advancement, you will reassure your interviewer that you are looking to make a commitment to the company and your career, leid just filling the time until you can retire. For example, if you would like to advance from sales to sales management, you might express your high level of interest in expanding your product knowledge, developing strong relationships with clients, and expanding sales. Then you could mention that, in the future, you would like to share what you had learned with newer sales representatives and coach them towardsuccess by taking on a role as a sales manager. How to Handle the Interview When You Plan on Retiring For older workerswho are obviously closer to the normal retirement age, you have a decision to make as to whether to address this issue directly. It can be effective to say something like, I love my work and certainly dont anticipate retiring within that time period. You could then go on to speak specifically about what you would hope to accomplish during that five- or 10-year period. Its true that no one, regardless of age, really knows for certain what they will be doing in five or 10 years. The trend today appears to be that seniors work longer before they retire than in the past. This may be due to economic factors or better health,so answer as honestly as you can without sabotaging your opportunities for employment. Corporate Transparency Checklist

Corporate Transparency ChecklistCorporate Transparency ChecklistCorporate Transparency Checklist Holtz and John C. HavensIn this era of transparency and social media, no organization can hide its head in the sand and avoid implementing the tools that will help it create better dialogue with customers, partners and employees.Use this guide to walk through the planning process. It has been crafted to work from the inside out to expose your brand to the new-media marketplace at large.Take the time to answer the following questions to determine your level of corporate transparency.Corporate Transparency AssessmentThe first few choices for each question below reflect traditional methodologies that organizations use to deal with feedback from employees and customers. By and large, behauptung are all one-sided conversations where management tells pepole what they think and the implied message is, If we want your opinion, well send you a survey.Answers to these questions reflect methodologie s employed by more progressive organizations that use tactical corporate transparency to better position their brand in the marketplace.Ask yourself the following questions about your organization as specifically as possibleWhat communications tools does management have in place to communicate to employees?Company wide e-mail blasts (one-way communication)Company newsletters (one-way communication)Leadership pages on the intranet (one-way communication)Town hall meetingsCEO or management blogs that allow for comments from othersCEO or management podcasts, videos, or interactive, real-time, rich media where employees can contribute their thoughts. How can employees respond to those communications? If they have concerns or questions, they e-mail their manager to resolveThey can submit an article for the company newsletterThey can submit a comment, questions, or suggestion using an intranet formThey can respond by commenting on CEO or management blogsThey can add comments to existing int ranet contentThey can interact directly with a CEO or manager using real-time, rich mediaHow did you do?The next two sets of questions reflect the mind-set of a traditional office that is not concerned with capturing feedback unless theres a direct need to respond. No dialogue is requested, and employees and customers typically dont have a feeling of ownership for their brand. Their loyalty goes as far as their paycheck or waiting until a competitor offers a lower-priced product or tafelgeschirr.Do your employees genuinely feel that their opinions and concerns matter to management and that their interests are factored into managements decision-making process? Not sure why it mattersI dont knowNo, but at least were listeningYes, and heres how I know insert specifics hereWhat tools do you have in place to capture employee thoughts and ideas?Employees can submit thoughts and ideas to their managers for discussionEmployees can submit thoughts and ideas in departmental meetings where appr opriateEmployees can submit thoughts and ideas by commenting on company blogs or other rich media presentationsEmployees can submit thoughts and ideas using the media they create on blogs or other formatsEmployees can use an online submission tool that allows other employees to comment and vote on ideas and issues that are raisedYour answers to these questions demonstrate that a company is providing tools for dialogue. This is the first step toward true corporate transparency because it shows that the organization is listening to a variety of sources and publics. It also demonstrates preparedness to accept and address criticism, because the comments people make may not always be positive. If those comments stay publish so they can be dealt with, trust is invariably given to management since they didnt silence a critical voice. Are your employees champions for your brand away from the workplace? Not sure why it mattersI dont knowNo, but were working to empower them to feel ownership of our brandYes, and heres how I know insert specifics hereHow do you communicate with your customers?By posting updated news and press releasese on our Web siteThrough media outreach (placing articles on the mainstream and trade press)Via our customer service representatives online or by phoneVia our various department blogs and other rich media where we have a direct dialogue with our customersVia the blogs and social community weve created for our customers so they can create discussions around our brand themselvesThe final answers represent an ultimate goal for tactical corporate transparency providing your employees and customers tools to create media around your brand for themselves, outside of what management is doing.Enlightened leaders understand that conversations around their brand are taking place all the time, so why not create a community for users that you can host? Let them speak freely about your products and services in an environment where you can prove youre listeni ng all the time.Excerpted from Tactical Transparency, by Shel Holtz and John C.
